Rishikesh

Not much to report here, we stayed 4 nights - very cruisy relaxed place, it kind of felt like a resort. Only a little tacky - and strictly no alcohol (except for one waiter who offered us a kingfisher on the last night...).

It was pretty cool to see the Ganges river, it is pretty important to these guys. We met people who had come  from all around the area to bathe in one of the many holy "ghats" - steps down to the river. After we read a fact out of the guide book, we were pretty keen to keep our toes out - " Water that is safe for bathing should have less than 500 faecal coliform bacteria in every litre of water. Samples show that parts of the Ganges have 1.5 million parts in every litre." These guys swim, wash, drink, give offerings, send their burning dead, do everything in this river. In Varanasi alone, there are 32 sources of raw sewage pumped straight into the river. However, it was impressive to sit in a cafe overlooking it.

We went for a walk up to some waterfalls, and on the way buddied up with three students who were also walking up there. We buddied up because we were scared of a bunch of monkeys sitting in the middle of the road who had just chased a jeep past us!! Freaky things! totally should have got the rabies jab... ;)
The waterfalls were not amazing, but still, pretty cool to see some semi clean river water in India! The guys we met are in the photos. 2 locals (1 who looked like wolverine) and a mexican on a scholarship.

We attended our first ever yoga class here in Rishikesh (the thing to do apparently). Brock says first and last. Luckily the yoga teacher moved me away from Brock as I was starting to giggle and snort at the sight of Brock trying to contort his long limbs into the yoga poses with much huffing and puffing!! An interesting experience but I don't think it had Brock sold!

Bridge in Rishikesh. Look out for monkeys!
 Ganges River

A local watching the people cruise past.. its a good life
Bartering for fish food (its a surprise fish can even survive in the river!)
