Jodhpur

Jodhpur is quite a big city in the desert state with the main attraction being the big fort over looking the city. We had a great place to stay but have discovered a reoccurring problem here in the desert state of Rajasthan, the noisy fan! We are beginning to search and rate a room based on the fan noise level.

Jodhpur is known as the blue city and from the for view that was pretty obvious. We learnt that the colour blue is cool in the summer heat and it also works as an insect repellent.
The fort is a World Heritage site and was really well set up to cruise around inside and see the palace where the Maharajas lived and the seat where they like to sit and smoke their opium pipes. Yes, apparently it is still smoked here for weddings, births and we're guessing for a general good time.

Other than the fort, which we did spend the day exploring, most of our main highlights in Jodhpur were definitely food related.

The man in the grey suit, in the background, is the Omelette man. Not to be confused with the many fake Omelette man stalls surrounding his. He stands all day from 10am till late making amazing omelettes and using up to 6000 eggs per day! This man knows his stuff. A delicious omelette sandwiched between two pieces of bread, so simple, so amazing.

Another culinary highlight had to be, the best thali we have had here in India. It was from a local place which was absolutely packed and rushed off their feet serving up mainly thalis. So we thought we would give it a try. We are still trying to figure out why on earth they don't serve Thalis in restaurants at home. It's like your own little selection dish of curries, rotis, rice, raita, pickles and even a sweet! So delicious and so much choice!!

Much to our delight we managed to stumble upon some fine dining on the rooftops in Jodhpur. You soon find out, in India, that half the fun and action is to be had on the rooftop world of India.
The restaurant, Indique, we found out is where all of the 50yrs+ wealthy tourists, in their big tour groups head to escape the harsh realities of India. We have come across so many organised tour groups here in Rajasthan with older, wealthier people with their cameras slung from their necks being herded around the tourist sites!

With a booking secured (it was that flash) we headed along at 7.30pm only to be sat at the bar drinking beer for about an hour an a half before we were seated. Booking apparently don't really mean anything in India but they definitely made their money keeping us sitting at the bar that long! We were more than happy to wait, great views, lamb curry and a true Indian Butter Chicken sure made up for it! We figure it had to be the safest place to attempt meat much to Brock's delight and you can't possibly leave India without having a real Indian Butter Chicken.
